Athletes During Lockdown

Through every crisis comes opportunity, and a trio of star athletes are taking advantage of the time created by the national lockdown to improve their athletic skills and performance.

Carli Lloyd, a three-time Olympian in soccer, will have to wait a while to compete on the biggest stage of international sports. The coronavirus pandemic forced officials to postpone the Olympic Games in Tokyo to 2021.

While naturally disappointed, Lloyd has found the silver lining in the big pushback. She talked about this during a live stream on Yahoo Sports called, #WeKeepPlaying.

“I’ve probably had the best training I’ve ever had in my entire career,” said Lloyd. “There’s nothing on my schedule but working out. I’m getting more fit, I’m getting sharper and I don’t feel rushed doing it.”

Lloyd has not only been using her home gym, but also the facility of her personal coach in New Jersey.

“It’s a really great set-up and I can just focus my entire mind on getting better,” she said. “Something like this will, hopefully, never happen again, but I’m definitely making the most of it.”

Katie Ledecky, who has five Olympic gold medals in swimming hanging on her wall at home, won’t be getting much time in the pool, but she is doing dryland workouts.

“You can only control what you can control and try to win each day,” said Ledecky.

Ledecky is trying to win in the virtual classroom too, as she tries to plow through her on-line work at Stanford University.

“I just started some new classes,” said the Bethesda, Maryland native. “It’s been great to keep my mind active and continue toward my degree, as well. I’ve been very productive during this time.”

Sabrina Ionescu was hoping to be leading Oregon to the national championship in basketball at this time, but the global pandemic ended her season and career.

“It was devastating,” said the All-American point guard. “I’m not sure I’ll never be able to get over it. But I guess everything happens for a reason,” she added.

Ionescu was recently taken as the number one pick in WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty.

“I’m trying to stay busy,” she said. “I’m doing yoga, a lot of school work, and working on the things I need to improve on.”
