Best In The World And Beautiful While Doing It
Athletes like Serena Williams and Lindsey Vonn have redefined what it means to be a female athlete. Their powerful bodies, fierce mindset, and competitive drive have brought them gold medals and widespread respect in the world of sports–but that hasn’t tainted their love for cosmetics and fashion, and a desire to be camera-ready at all times. If you look back at past matches, races, TV interviews, wherever they appear–Williams and Vonn always look stunning.
While Williams prefers to stick to a simple eyeliner on the court, her nails and attire are rarely understated. In addition to her 23 Grand Slam titles, she also holds a degree in fashion from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and doubles as a trained nail technician. So, while her pre-game rituals are evidently geared toward warming up and mental preparation, she never steps on the court or into an interview without her nails primped and her style on point.
Vonn, however, prefers to wear a bit more makeup while she skis–largely because of the weather conditions. Moisturizer and lip gloss to protect from the cold, sunscreen, foundation, and powder to protect from the sun, and, obviously, waterproof mascara and eyeliner in case she becomes emotional while receiving an Olympic gold medal, as she did in 2010. Fortunately for Vonn, these “protective measures” leave her looking red-carpet-ready as she reaches the bottom of every hill she races down.
Although Vonn retired from skiing after the 2019 World Championships in Sweden, she has shifted her passion toward the cosmetic industry. “I didn’t know what to expect when I retired, but now I’m focusing all of my competitive energy and drive into starting my own business,” Vonn said via SnowBrains. “It’s a learning process, but beauty is something I’ve always been passionate about. To me, putting on makeup is like putting on my game face. When I have my makeup on, I feel like I’m ready to attack the world and anything is possible.”
Williams also founded her own fashion business called S by Serena in 2018 and funds other small business ideas run by women and minorities through Serena Ventures.
Women like Serena Williams and Lindsey Vonn have faced judgment from the media in regards to body image and appearance for years–which, unfortunately, many female athletes encounter throughout their careers. However, these two women recognize that they are some of the best in the world at their respective sports, they are role models for young girls, they are so much bigger than themselves. They have powerful bodies and competitive drive–but they have also helped us realize that being the best does not mean sacrificing a passion for beauty and style.
