Cori “Coco” Gauff is a fifteen-year-old tennis player who was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She’s a typical high school student in the state of Florida who does her homework and studies for tests like every other kid. Different than many, however, she has a unique set of tennis skills that could take her a long way in the sport. Since her youth, she has been coached by her father, Corey Gauff, who gave her the inspiration she needed to take on the difficult, winding road of professional tennis.
Coco grew up idolizing Serena and Venus Williams as motivation to some day follow in their footsteps. After capturing the Junior French Open title and becoming the youngest player to qualify for Wimbledon, she seemed to be quickly on her way. Oddly enough, throughout the early stages of her young tennis journey, she has been regularly compared to the Williams sisters when they were her age. Now she has that opportunity to put her mark on the game only at 15!
Wimbledon began on July 1st and Coco was ready to give it her all. In her first major tournament, nerves were at an all-time high in anticipation of receiving her opponent. When her opponent was set, the match was poised for an amazing story either way it went. Out of the entire field, she was selected to face off against one of her idols, Venus Williams!
After growing up watching and mirroring every move of the Williams sisters, either outcome of the match was going to make for a great learning experience. The reality of facing one of her idols would still be a moment of a lifetime. Although it would be an uphill battle, she was ready for the challenge. What better feeling would it be to become youngest qualified female tennis player at Wimbledon and beat one of the greatest, 5-time, Wimbledon champions all in one day?
She did JUST THAT. Battling hard until the end, Coco defeated Venus in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) for one of the most historic victories in Wimbledon history. With the odds against her, Coco’s speed, precision, and mobility helped her defeat one of the best to ever do it.
Coco Gauff will advance to the 2nd round of the Wimbledon against Magdalena Rybarikova on July 3rd at 5:00 AM ET.
