Celebrating Women & Girls In Sports

Inspirational Quotes From Some Of The Greatest Ever

All great champions are motivated by something. Some look outside themselves for something that drives them. Others look inward to light a fire. Some athletes are inspired by what others do, some are moved by what they say. Here are words of wisdom from some true champions.

“I’d rather regret the risks that didn’t work out than the chances I didn’t take at all,” – Simone Biles

“True champions aren’t always the ones that win, but those with the most guts,” – Mia Hamm

“Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That’s what little girls are made of. The heck with the sugar and spice,” – Bethany Hamilton

“Overpower. Overtake. Overcome,” – Serena Williams

“Take those chances and you can achieve greatness, whereas if you go conservative, you’ll never know. I truly believe what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Even if you fail, learning and moving on is sometimes the best thing,” – Danica Patrick

“Believe me, the reward is not so great without the struggle,” – Wilma Rudolph

“No matter what life throws at you, or how unfair you think it is, never give up. Pick yourself up and go on,” – Megan Rapinoe

Sports legends like Wilma Rudolph and Althea Gibson sit atop almost everyone’s list of racial trailblazers in women’s sports, but Tina Sloan Green is another woman who has made a huge impact to sports. Green was the first African-American to play for the U.S. women's national field hockey team and the first women's lacrosse coach at Temple University in Philadelphia, but many consider her biggest impact to be the founding of the Black Women In Sport Foundation in 1992.⠀
