NWSL Announces Newest Expansion Team: Racing Louisville FC
Earlier this month, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced that they would be adding a new team into the mix for the 2021 season: Racing Louisville FC.
In a YouTube video posted on July 8th, it shares how they came about the team’s name, their logo, and their colors.
In an article posted by Sports Illustrated, James O’Connor, the former Louisville City manager and the current Executive Vice-President of Development for Soccer Holdings LLC, has taken on the role of finding coaching and management. He said “We are very excited to launch our brand — a first step in bringing our team to life.”
In addition to Louisville, the NWSL is exploring cities for teams to call home. Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Austin are the top contenders for a team in 2022.
Not only does this team give another area of the country a squad to cheer for; it broadens the horizons for female athletes, and grows soccer among fans, and gives girls a team to work for and possibly join because of their new youth academy.
Branded by the same name and colors, the youth academy aims to “develop more professional, collegiate, and national team players than any other academy in the U.S..” This will allow the girls of Louisville and the surrounding areas the access to higher level competition, qualified coaches, and the ability to grow and develop into the best soccer players they can be. The development program is open for registration now, and takes children from ages 8-20, according to their website.
O’Connor says of the program, “We are thrilled to be able to announce this group of coaches. The NWSL academy is a key piece to our women’s program. As we develop and grow we envisage having multiple young women who will have played in this academy go on to represent the NWSL First team.”
