Out Of Her Teenage Spotlight, This Softball Star Shines In College

The spotlight burned brightly on Mo’ne Davis in 2014. The pitching phenom from Philadelphia was on the cover of Sports Illustrated after tossing a pair of shutouts in the Little League World Series. Today, Davis plays softball at Hampton University in Virginia.

“From second grade all the way through graduation I’ve been at a predominantly white school,” Davis told ESPN’s Outside The Lines in 2019. “Just to be able to go to an HBCU and to get that experience, just to follow the path that a lot of African-Americans went through, I thought it would be pretty cool.”

Pretty cool is how a lot of people would describe Davis’ experiences in sports. She was a Little League hero and a basketball star who had dreams of playing for UConn. However, those dreams didn’t pan out as she lost interest in the game and decided to focus on another sport.

“I was scared to tell my parents and coach that’s what I wanted to do because they put all these hours into taking me to different basketball tournaments and spending tons of money to go all over the country to play,” Davis told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“I wanted to do something for the next four years to have fun, and softball was it,” Davis told SI.com. “Nowadays, sports are a little too serious. I just try to have as much fun as possible.”

Davis had fun and a lot of success during her freshman year at Hampton. She batted .333 in 19 games as the team’s starting third baseman. The rest of the season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Davis will be back in school in the fall and hopes to be a part of the Hampton softball team once again. But when she graduates in three years, Davis could be under the bright lights of television yet again as she is determined to become a sportscaster.
