The Sports World Honors Front Line Workers With #TheRealHeroes Project
Although sports have taken a halt due to the pandemic, athletes are still making a major impact on the community with their tribute to the workers risking their lives daily. 14 professional sports leagues including the ATP, MLB, MLS, NASCAR, NBA, NFL, NHL, NWSL, USGA, WNBA, WTA, and WWE participated in#TheRealHeroes project, launched on May 6th, 2020, National Nurses Day, to honor the brave healthcare and frontline workers.
Players are dedicating game shirts and jerseys to a special healthcare hero who is helping their community at the forefront of the global crisis. Throughout the PSA and personal tributes, set to Beyonce’s Halo, athletes will cover their names on their jerseys or uniforms and replace them with the name of their healthcare hero, as seen in the video.
The athletes participating include tennis stars, Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka, and Bianca Andreescu, two-time World Cup and Olympic Champion Carli Lloyd, 2018 WNBA Most Valuable Player Breanna Stewart, four-time WNBA All-Star guard Skylar Diggins-Smith, pro wrestler and WWE superstar, Charlotte Flair, and many more big-name athletes. Flair honors R.N. Jill Cardone who is working in the emergency department of the hospital.
“She spends her time putting herself out there to protect others and to me, that’s an inspiration. Jill, you’re the true queen, the real hero”
Phoenix Mercury star, Diggins-Smith, thanks to healthcare hero Nicole Freeman. Diggins-Smith wants to give back the support and encouragement that she often receives as an athlete. Diggins told Adweek,
“Just like you cheer for me and you cheer for us, I want to cheer for you. Let’s go Nicole! I hope that recognition will last beyond the pandemic. I hope we honor them every day. We have to give people their flowers while they are with us.”
GoodSport would like to thank all of the frontline workers and healthcare heroes for helping to keep us safe, even when we are not. Your selfless commitment is the definition of heroism. Thank a hero of your own and use the hashtag, #TheRealHeroes.
