Most people look forward to starting their day with a morning cup of joe, but it is important to be aware of the positive and negative side effects that come along with caffeine intake. Most commonly, people resort to a cup of coffee for their caffeine fix. However, caffeine is also found in soda, green and black tea, and energy drinks.
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, which is why most people drink it. As the caffeine reaches your brain and nervous system, you begin to feel more alert and awake. People often rely on their coffee and energy drinks as a quick “pick-me-up” when they are feeling tired or drowsy.
Headaches and Irritability
When your caffeine intake starts to increase, you may experience caffeine withdrawal. The blood vessels in your brain get accustomed to the caffeine stimulating your body, so once you stop consuming caffeine it can cause headaches. These withdrawal headaches can also cause anxiety and irritability because your body is used to being over stimulated.
Caffeine is a diuretic which means you will experience increased urination. With excessive amounts of caffeine you can also experience a high urgency to urinate as the caffeine directly affects your bladder muscles. Long-term consumption of excessive amounts of caffeine can cause or worsen existence bladder problems.
Increased Bowel Movements
Many people rely on their daily cup of coffee to get their digestive system up and running. It’s stimulating factors can also stimulate your intestines which may cause an urgency to use the bathroom or even diarrhea. As many people like to add milk or cream into their coffee, these lactose ingredients also promote bowel movements.
Increased Blood Pressure
As caffeine enters the body and stimulates the central nervous system, it can also temporarily raise your blood pressure. The increase in blood pressure usually will only last a short amount of time, but can be more noticeable if you consume caffeine during or after exercising.
Along with the increased blood pressure, caffeine also causes a rapid heartbeat. Many people will feel their heart rate increase if they drink more caffeine than they normally do. Individuals with pre-existing heart conditions should be more cautious with their caffeine intake.
Sometimes we are looking for that extra boost from caffeine, but other times it may not be so enjoyable. With increased caffeine intake you may experience jitters or feelings of shakiness. For people with anxiety or sleep disorders, caffeine may heighten and make your symptoms worse.
Caffeine increases the amount of acid in your stomach which can lead to heartburn. The acidity from caffeinated beverages can also cause your stomach to feel irritated and upset.
