Celebrating Women & Girls In Sports

Undefeated French Soccer Club Has A Documentary On The Way

The Olympique Lyonnais Féminin is a soccer club based in Lyons, France. They have been undefeated in any competitive match since 2018. They haven’t lost to another European club since 2017, and have been undefeated on foreign grounds from 2013 onward.

The Olympique Lyonnais Féminin is the most successful women’s soccer team in the world, with 13 consecutive domestic league titles and six UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, including the last four in a row. United States Women’s National Team superstar, Megan Rapinoe, played for them in the 2013-2014 season.

The team is currently composed of superstars. ⅔ of the team is from their home country of France, but have players from as far as Japan and Australia. Some of the most notable names include Ada Hegerberg, a Norwegian goal-scoring powerhouse who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, and Eugénie Le Sommer who was voted the best soccer player by the National Professional Football players Union in 2015.

Some of our favorite United States Women’s National Team players have duked it out on the pitch for the Lyons, like Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe

Their success is remarkable. So much so that film writer Stéphanie Gillard created a movie about their successful 2018/19 season. The documentary, titled Les Joueuses – Pas Là Pour Danser (The players- Not Here To Dance), follows the team’s day-to-day lives through the course of that season.

That might seem like a funny title for a movie about one of the best soccer teams in the world, but it comes in response to a question asked to Hegerberg when she won the Ballon d’Or, the most prestigious award in all of soccer. A reporter asked her if she could twerk, live on camera while she accepted the award. Gillard says that reporters in France compared these female soccer players to dancers, rather than professional athletes.

The film came out in France on September 9th, 2020. With their new found fame on the screen, the Olympique Lyonnais Féminin look to continue their success for the future on the pitch. Using the film as a stepping stone to show the realities of being a female soccer player on one of the best teams in the world, and create goals for future soccer stars to come.

Sports legends like Wilma Rudolph and Althea Gibson sit atop almost everyone’s list of racial trailblazers in women’s sports, but Tina Sloan Green is another woman who has made a huge impact to sports. Green was the first African-American to play for the U.S. women's national field hockey team and the first women's lacrosse coach at Temple University in Philadelphia, but many consider her biggest impact to be the founding of the Black Women In Sport Foundation in 1992.⠀
