The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) has given America World Cup fever. Their extremely impressive start and continuous success throughout the tournament has captured fan’s hearts nationwide. Compared to the men’s team, their success has been unmatched. Over the past 30 years, the USWNT has reached 8 World Cup semi-finals (including 3 World Cups titles), whereas the men have reached none.
In parallel to the USWNT’s success and reaching the semifinals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the team has continued to dominate headlines off of the field. Their jersey has been one of the most popular sellers in stores and online over the past few weeks, particularly on its retail site, nike.com, making record-breaking sales. Heidi Burgett, senior director of global communications for Nike, posted on Twitter this past Saturday stating, “The USA Women’s Home jersey is now the #1 soccer jersey, men’s or women’s ever sold on nike.com in one season.”
The jersey sales, along with the record breaking TV viewership numbers during this World Cup, continues to show the growth of women’s soccer. The more America’s youth sees role models, the more they are motivated to be like them one day.
